PETRA urges Bumiputera solar firms to strengthen project fundamentals and meet critical requirements

PUTRAJAYA, April 18 – Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has called on Bumiputera solar companies to focus on key project fundamentals to ensure the successful execution of renewable energy initiatives.

These include technical capability, financial strength, site suitability and compliance with regulatory approvals.

Industry engagement gathers key players

The message was delivered during a strategic engagement session chaired by Fadillah Yusof, with more than 100 participants representing around 50 Bumiputera solar firms.

Expanding role in renewable energy sector

The session forms part of a broader effort to strengthen local participation in renewable energy, particularly through the Large Scale Solar (LSS) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) programmes.

The initiative aligns with national frameworks such as NETR and PuTERA35.

LSS programme sees steady growth

Since its introduction in 2016, the LSS programme has expanded significantly, reaching over 6,000MW in capacity across multiple rollout phases, including dedicated quotas for Bumiputera and SME players.

Four key implementation principles

Energy Commission Malaysia highlighted four core principles guiding LSS and BESS projects: grid stability, cost competitiveness, project viability and local industry development.

Industry challenges raised

Participants highlighted key issues such as financing constraints, experience gaps, tariff structures and the need for more competitive market mechanisms.

Encouraging collaboration and capability building

PETRA aims to foster collaboration among Bumiputera companies to undertake larger-scale projects while enhancing industry competitiveness.

Driving decarbonisation goals

The initiative supports Malaysia’s broader decarbonisation agenda, with a target of achieving 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050 while positioning Bumiputera players as key contributors.
