TNB Allocates RM800 Thousand for Green Initiative, Targets 40,000 Trees Nationwide

PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability with the launch of the My Brighter Green Initiative (MBGI) 2026, allocating RM800,000 to support biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration efforts across Malaysia.

Under the initiative, the national utility company aims to plant 40,000 forest and mangrove saplings at six strategic locations nationwide as part of broader efforts to strengthen climate resilience, restore coastal ecosystems and improve the well-being of local communities.

The programme, which was officially launched at Kubang Badak in Langkawi, involved around 150 participants comprising TNB employees, local residents, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), educational institutions and other stakeholders.

TNB chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid said MBGI 2026 reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to translating its sustainability agenda into meaningful actions that create lasting benefits for both society and the environment.

According to him, the programme extends beyond tree planting and includes monitoring and maintenance activities to ensure a high survival rate for the saplings planted.

“Through MBGI 2026, TNB will plant 40,000 trees at six strategic locations nationwide, which are expected to absorb approximately 67 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) annually.

“This is equivalent to a petrol-powered car travelling more than 249,000 kilometres or the annual electricity consumption of nearly 13 households,” he said in a statement.

He added that the initiative also supports Malaysia’s energy transition agenda and the national aspiration of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Abdul Razak said approximately 1,000 volunteers are expected to participate throughout the programme, taking part in tree planting, monitoring and maintenance activities.

Apart from Kubang Badak in Langkawi, the initiative will also be implemented in Tanjung Burung in Perak, Tanjung Tuan in Melaka, Jimah in Negeri Sembilan, Nibong Tebal in Penang and at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) in Selangor.

He explained that the selected sites are ecologically significant areas with strong potential for restoration and long-term environmental benefits.

As the first location for MBGI 2026, Kubang Badak witnessed the planting of 10,000 mangrove saplings through a strategic collaboration between TNB and the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).

The site was chosen because of its rich mangrove ecosystem, which serves as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and helps protect surrounding areas from extreme weather conditions.

The mangrove species planted include Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata, both known for their ability to absorb and store carbon while providing habitats for marine life.

Abdul Razak said MBGI 2026 continues TNB’s long-standing greening efforts, which began in 2007 through collaborations with NGOs, local authorities and government agencies.

“To ensure long-term impact, TNB will continue monitoring and maintaining the trees for up to two years after planting.

“This is essential to improve survival rates and ensure the ecosystem restoration objectives are successfully achieved,” he said.

Beyond environmental conservation, TNB is also implementing several corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives for local communities with total contributions exceeding RM170,000.

Among the projects are the construction of a water well at Kubang Badak Fishermen’s Jetty, contributions to Masjid Kampung Ewa and the provision of smart learning equipment to Sekolah Kebangsaan Ewa and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ayer Hangat.

The company has also built a house under its Baiti Jannati project for an underprivileged family in Kampung Mawat.

According to Abdul Razak, TNB spent more than RM232.3 million on community programmes during the 2025 financial year, covering education, sports, social welfare and environmental initiatives.

He said the company would continue expanding its sustainability and community development efforts to ensure business growth goes hand in hand with social well-being and environmental preservation for future generations.
