Over 300 Fake Energy-Related Posts Detected, 40 Investigation Papers Opened — Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA, April 9 — Malaysian authorities have identified more than 300 instances of fake content related to fuel supply and pricing, prompting the opening of over 40 investigation papers against accounts suspected of spreading misleading information.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the move follows a surge in online content that allegedly exploits the global energy crisis to shape negative public perception toward the government.

He revealed that the Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia has instructed social media platforms to remove approximately 350 pieces of content identified as false.

About half of the flagged content has already been taken down, while the remainder is still under investigation.

“Some of the content has been removed, but others are still being examined. I urge Malaysians to exercise caution when consuming and sharing information, especially on matters related to the global energy crisis,” he said at a press conference.

In connection with the probe, around 20 individuals believed to be involved have been called in to provide statements.

Fahmi noted that investigations are currently focused on identifying the origin of the content, the methods used to disseminate it, and the underlying motives.

While he did not rule out possible links to political entities, he emphasised that no confirmed connections have been established so far.

He added that the priority remains to understand how such content is produced and amplified across digital platforms, leading to widespread public confusion.

The situation unfolds amid heightened global energy tensions, which have also contributed to the proliferation of misinformation online.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to taking firm action to safeguard information integrity and prevent disruptions to public order.

The public has also been advised to verify information before sharing, to help curb the spread of false content in an increasingly complex information environment.
