Jefri Nichol Caught in Kelantan Dialect Wave, Admits Struggling to Keep Up with Malaysian Netizens

PETALING JAYA, April 8 — Indonesian actor Jefri Nichol has found himself unexpectedly caught up in a wave of Malaysian online humour after his social media platforms were flooded with comments in the Kelantan dialect.

The situation, he said, left him trying to keep up with conversations that were often difficult to understand due to cultural nuances and language differences.

Jefri explained that while he attempted to engage with fans by replying to their comments, he realised that he was not fully grasping the meaning behind many of the messages.

As a result, he issued an apology to followers, acknowledging that some of his responses might have been inaccurate or misunderstood.

He stressed that he had no intention of offending anyone and was simply trying to interact in a friendly and casual manner on Threads.

“I feel like I’ve gone too deep into inside jokes and conversations related to Malaysia, but I don’t fully understand what’s going on,” he shared.

The situation gained traction after the actor was seen actively replying to Malaysian netizens using the Kelantan dialect, which further amplified the trend.

Earlier, Jefri had expressed confusion over the sudden influx of such comments on his social media accounts.

The phenomenon is believed to be linked to public interest in his past relationship with Malaysian influencer Ameera Khan.

Addressing the issue, Jefri urged netizens to maintain boundaries when joking, particularly when it comes to his family.

He emphasised that while he is open to humour directed at himself, references involving his mother or family members should be avoided.

“You can joke about me, but please don’t involve my mother or family,” he said.

For context, Jefri and Ameera were previously reported to have ended their relationship after both unfollowed each other on social media and removed shared photos in November last year.

The episode highlights how cross-cultural digital interactions can sometimes lead to unexpected situations, especially when language and local context play a significant role.
