Saarani Dismisses July Perak State Poll Speculation, Says No Such Plan Discussed

IPOH, April 8 — Perak Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad has dismissed speculation that the state may hold elections as early as July, stating that no such proposal has ever been discussed at any official level.

He described the analysis published by an English-language newspaper as unfounded, noting that it does not reflect any actual deliberation within the state leadership.

Saarani said he was surprised by the report, as there has been no indication or discussion regarding the dissolution of the state legislative assembly.

He explained that calling for a state election involves a formal process, including seeking an audience with Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah to propose the dissolution of the assembly.

He added that if such a proposal is not granted consent by the Sultan, it could carry serious consequences, including being interpreted as a resignation of the Menteri Besar.

Given these considerations, Saarani stressed that there is currently no intention to pursue such a move.

He pointed out that the state government still has more than a year remaining in its five-year mandate, making early elections unnecessary at this stage.

In this context, he described the speculation surrounding a possible July election as baseless and inconsistent with the current political situation in the state.

The earlier report had suggested that Perak could serve as a “low-risk testing ground” to gauge voter sentiment, particularly among Malay voters, ahead of larger national contests.

However, Saarani firmly rejected the notion, reiterating that no such strategy has been considered by the state administration.

He emphasised that the government’s priority remains on governance and development, rather than engaging in political speculation.

The statement effectively puts to rest talk of an imminent state election, at least based on the official stance of the Perak state leadership.
