Work-From-Home Policy Aims to Cut Operational Costs Amid Energy Crisis — Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA, April 9 — Malaysia’s move to implement a work-from-home (WFH) policy for the public sector starting April 15 is being positioned as a strategic effort to optimise government operational spending amid global energy pressures.

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative is designed to reduce fuel consumption among civil servants, thereby contributing to cost savings in public sector operations.

He explained that the policy is part of a broader response to the ongoing global energy crisis triggered by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which has driven up fuel costs and impacted national expenditure.

“The objective is to ensure more efficient fuel usage within the public sector and achieve measurable savings in operational costs,” he said during a press briefing following a Cabinet meeting.

The policy will apply across ministries, government agencies, statutory bodies and government-linked companies (GLCs), with implementation tailored to each organisation’s operational needs.

However, Fahmi clarified that critical sectors such as education, healthcare and security will be exempted to ensure uninterrupted essential services.

In sectors like communications, he noted that departments will have the flexibility to determine how best to implement WFH arrangements without compromising service delivery.

He highlighted that modern communication technologies enable many functions to be carried out remotely, including through mobile devices.

“With today’s digital capabilities, many tasks can be performed effectively from anywhere,” he said.

The policy is also seen as a short-term measure to ease fiscal pressure while maintaining operational efficiency during a challenging economic period.

In addition to cost savings, the initiative may bring secondary benefits such as reduced traffic congestion and improved work-life balance for civil servants.

The government stated that the effectiveness of the WFH policy will be continuously monitored, with adjustments made as necessary to ensure that public service delivery remains unaffected.
