TNB Thunderstars Field 16 National Players in Bold Treble Bid
KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — Malaysian hockey side TNB Thunderbolts is setting its sights on a treble this season, backed by a formidable squad featuring 16 national-level players.
Head coach Mohd Madzli Ikmar Mohd Nor said the team is well-positioned to compete for all major titles, beginning with the Charity Shield clash against Terengganu Hockey Team this weekend.
He noted that the presence of a large number of national players strengthens the team’s depth, experience and overall quality, raising expectations for a strong campaign.
Following the World Cup qualifiers in Egypt, several national players joined the squad, bringing the total to 16 — the highest ever assembled by the team.
Madzli acknowledged that the treble target is ambitious, but stressed that with such a strong lineup, the team must rise to the challenge and deliver consistent performances.
Looking ahead to the opening fixture of the Liga Hoki Malaysia (MHL), he expressed confidence that the players are fully prepared, both physically and mentally.
He added that the team has undergone thorough preparations and is ready to showcase discipline, intensity and character on match day.
Despite the squad’s strength, competition rules allow only eight national players on the field at any one time, requiring careful tactical management.
However, Madzli downplayed this as a decisive advantage, emphasising that success ultimately depends on effort, fitness and execution during matches.
He highlighted that hockey is a high-intensity sport that demands constant movement, and any drop in tempo could prove costly.
Compared to previous seasons, the current squad represents a significant upgrade in terms of national-level representation, reflecting the club’s commitment to competing at the highest level.
With a blend of talent, preparation and ambition, TNB Thunderstars is poised to be a major contender in this season’s competition.
