Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd Warns of Low Water Pressure in Sibu Following Power Disruption
SIBU, May 3 — Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Water) has issued a notice warning residents in several areas of Sibu of possible low water pressure following a cable theft incident that disrupted operations at a key water treatment facility.
According to the utility company, the incident involved the theft of an earthing cable at the substation of the Salim Phase 1 Water Treatment Plant, which necessitated immediate repair work to restore normal functionality.
As part of the response, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is scheduled to carry out a temporary power shutdown to facilitate the replacement of the damaged infrastructure.
The electricity interruption is expected to last between one and three hours, beginning at approximately 11pm.
During this period, the water treatment plant will continue operating using generator sets to maintain supply, albeit at reduced capacity.
This is likely to result in lower water pressure in certain areas, particularly while the power outage is in effect.
“Consumers may experience reduced water pressure during the shutdown, especially while maintenance works are ongoing,” the company said in its statement.
Residents are advised to store sufficient water in advance and to use it carefully throughout the affected period.
Sarawak Water noted that water supply is expected to gradually return to normal once electricity is fully restored and plant operations stabilise.
The company also emphasised that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the repair work is carried out safely and completed as quickly as possible.
Members of the public are encouraged to stay updated through the company’s official communication channels for the latest information.
The incident highlights how infrastructure theft can directly impact essential public services, causing inconvenience to consumers.
Sarawak Water apologised for the disruption and expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation during the situation.
