Fahmi Says Jho Low Must Return And Face Trial Over 1MDB Scandal
KUALA LUMPUR: Fahmi Fadzil has stressed that fugitive businessman Jho Low should not be granted any form of pardon due to the massive damage linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
The Communications Minister said the impact and consequences brought upon the country by Jho Low were far too severe for any consideration of leniency or forgiveness.
“I share the same view as the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister that Jho Low should not receive any pardon or special consideration because of the enormous harm caused to the country,” he said.
He made the remarks after officiating the Parliamentary Lembah Pantai SPM Excellence Awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur today.
Fahmi said individuals connected to major financial scandals must remain accountable for their actions and should not escape the legal process.
“He must return, face the legal process and be brought before the courts. That is what should happen,” he added.
Earlier, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani, who also chairs the 1MDB Task Force, reportedly said Jho Low should not be pardoned.
The statement followed a report by The Wall Street Journal claiming that Jho Low was seeking a pardon from United States President Donald Trump.
The 1MDB Task Force led by Johari was established to trace and recover assets and funds linked to the multibillion-dollar scandal across several countries.
The 1MDB controversy became one of Malaysia’s biggest financial scandals and attracted global attention following allegations involving the misappropriation of massive amounts of public funds.
The government has repeatedly stressed its commitment to ensuring that all individuals linked to the case are brought to justice while efforts continue to recover assets connected to the scandal.
