Billions Seized as Government Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Gambling, Says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will continue to escalate enforcement against illegal gambling syndicates, revealing that operations so far have resulted in seizures amounting to billions of ringgit.

Speaking during the oral question session in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar — who also serves as Finance Minister — acknowledged the growing sophistication of online gambling networks.

Cross-Border and Technological Challenges

He noted that many operators are based overseas, complicating enforcement efforts.

In addition, highly advanced electronic systems allow illegal platforms to activate and shut down rapidly, making detection and prosecution increasingly difficult.

“These operators are agile and technologically sophisticated. It is not an easy task to curb such activities,” he said.

Linking Enforcement to Fiscal Discipline

Responding to a supplementary question from Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang), Anwar addressed whether enforcement against illegal gambling should be viewed as part of broader fiscal consolidation efforts, particularly in plugging revenue leakages rather than relying solely on subsidy reductions.

He emphasized that tackling illegal gambling is integral to strengthening financial governance and protecting national revenue streams.

Beyond social and moral concerns, he framed the issue as one of economic integrity and fiscal sustainability.

Broader Governance Strategy

Anwar added that enforcement measures are complemented by initiatives to enhance public accountability and raise awareness about the legal consequences of participating in unlawful gambling activities.

The intensified crackdown aligns with the government’s broader agenda to combat the shadow economy, reinforce fiscal discipline and ensure that illicit activities do not erode the country’s financial base.

The Prime Minister’s remarks signal that the fight against illegal gambling will remain a key component of Malaysia’s governance and fiscal reform strategy.
