Perlis assembly sitting postponed without explanation, lawmakers say reason unclear
KANGAR, April 17 – The upcoming session of the Perlis State Legislative Assembly, scheduled from April 21 to 23, has been postponed to a later date with no official reason provided.
A notice issued today confirmed the deferment but did not include any explanation.
Lawmakers left in the dark
Titi Tinggi assemblyman Izizam Ibrahim said he was informed of the decision only this afternoon and was not given any details.
Indera Kayangan assemblywoman Gan Ay Ling also expressed surprise, noting that such postponements are uncommon.
Rare occurrence outside crisis periods
Gan said assembly sittings are typically only delayed under exceptional circumstances, such as during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She stressed the importance of holding the session soon, given the number of issues awaiting debate.
Other representatives also unaware
Several other assembly members, including those from Bersatu, similarly said they were not informed of the reason behind the postponement.
First sitting after political upheaval
The session was expected to be the first following the political crisis in December, which saw the resignation of then Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli after losing majority support.
New leadership in place
Following the crisis, Abu Bakar Hamzah was appointed as the new Menteri Besar.
However, the current state administration does not include PAS representatives in the executive council lineup.
