Anwar orders review of Langkawi duty-free status and EV policies amid investment concerns

CYBERJAYA, April 18 – Anwar Ibrahim has directed a comprehensive review of a proposal to reinstate Langkawi’s duty-free status, while also calling for a reassessment of electric vehicle (EV) policies amid investor concerns.

The prime minister said the move is necessary to revitalise the island’s economy, which is facing rising costs and declining appeal among domestic tourists.

Focus on reviving Langkawi’s tourism economy

He noted that higher costs have reduced Langkawi’s competitiveness as a travel destination, prompting the need for targeted measures to stimulate recovery.

Amir Hamzah Azizan has been tasked with evaluating options to rejuvenate the island’s tourism sector.

Acknowledging royal proposal

Anwar also expressed appreciation for the proposal put forward by Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, emphasising that the government is open to examining the suggestion thoroughly.

The proposal was raised during the Kedah state assembly opening as part of efforts to boost the local economy.

EV policy under scrutiny

Separately, the prime minister said concerns over stringent conditions imposed on EV investors will be discussed with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry.

There are growing concerns that certain policies may be overly restrictive and could undermine investor confidence.

Impact on automotive investments

Reports indicate that the construction of an EV assembly plant by BYD in Tanjung Malim has stalled, allegedly due to challenges in meeting new regulatory requirements.

This has intensified calls for policy adjustments to ensure Malaysia remains an attractive investment destination.
