Shereen secures gold comeback, Umar adds to Malaysia’s strong showing in Singapore
PETALING JAYA, April 17 – Malaysian sprinter Shereen Samson Vallabouy delivered an encouraging start to her season by clinching gold in the women’s 400m at the Singapore Open, marking a strong comeback after a challenging period.
Competing at the Singapore National Stadium, she clocked 54.24 seconds to finish ahead of her regional rivals.
Promising season opener
Shereen entered the race without a specific time target but described the result as a solid foundation for the rest of the season.
The 26-year-old holds the national record of 51.80 seconds set in 2023.
Return after injury setback
The race marked her first competitive appearance since last year’s Asian Championships, following a hamstring injury that ruled her out of the SEA Games.
She is now focused on rebuilding confidence and regaining momentum.
Umar shines in men’s event
Fellow Malaysian Umar Osman also impressed by winning the men’s 400m in 47.14 seconds, securing another gold for the country.
He finished ahead of competitors from Indonesia and the Philippines.
Room for improvement
Despite the victory, Umar acknowledged that his timing remains below his national record and sees room for further progress as the season unfolds.
Relay team adds silver
Umar later contributed to Malaysia’s silver medal finish in the men’s 4x400m relay, with the team placing second behind the Philippines.
Another podium finish
In the men’s triple jump, Mohd Izzul Haniff secured silver with a leap of 15.53m, rounding off a strong outing for Malaysia.
