1MDB-linked artworks: Seven pieces still overseas as recovery efforts intensify
KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 – Malaysia is stepping up efforts to repatriate seven high-value artworks linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case, with authorities continuing to trace and recover assets held abroad.
Azam Baki, head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), said the artworks are currently under the custody of Christie’s in the United States.
Continuation of earlier recovery success
The initiative follows the successful return of four artworks previously brought back to Malaysia, valued at close to RM800,000.
Restitution beyond monetary value
Azam emphasised that asset recovery is not merely about financial restitution but also about restoring accountability, integrity and public confidence.
Masterpieces by renowned artists
The recovered works include pieces by globally recognised artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Maurice Utrillo and Balthus.
They are currently secured at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
Cross-border cooperation key
The recovery process involves coordinated international efforts aimed at identifying and reclaiming assets acquired through misappropriated funds.
