RM5 ‘Ayam Gunting’ Emerges as Crowd Favourite at Mersing’s Rahmah Ramadan Bazaar
MERSING, Feb 28 — A budget-friendly RM5 ayam gunting has become one of the biggest attractions at the Rahmah Ramadan Bazaar (BRR) in Taman Wawasan, highlighting how the initiative continues to help Malaysians cope with rising living costs during the fasting month.
The government-backed bazaar, now in its fourth year, enables traders to offer affordable food options, making it easier for families to purchase meals for iftar without overspending.
A visit to the bazaar revealed a range of Rahmah menu items priced at RM5, with fried chicken proving especially popular among visitors.
Traders committed to offering affordable options
Trader Aziani Mohd Nordin, 40, said the programme allows her to cater to customers seeking lower-priced meals despite higher ingredient costs.
She said her regular ayam gunting sells for RM10, but she introduced a RM5 version under the Rahmah initiative.
“The RM5 Rahmah ayam gunting comes with three pieces of chicken. It gives customers an affordable choice,” she said.
She added that the menu has received strong demand.
Rahmah initiative expanded nationwide
Introduced in 2023 by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the Rahmah Ramadan Bazaar initiative has since expanded to 116 locations nationwide, including nine in Johor.
The programme aims to ease the financial burden on consumers during Ramadan.
Customers welcome affordable meal options
Customer Ummi Fatini Rashid, 25, said the RM5 ayam gunting has become her favourite choice for breaking fast.
“It’s delicious, filling and affordable. I always buy it when I visit,” she said.
However, some visitors said they prefer cooking main meals at home to save money.
Families balance spending while enjoying bazaar atmosphere
Teacher’s assistant Asiah Jamian said she usually buys desserts and snacks rather than full meals.
She said rising food prices have made budgeting necessary.
Another visitor, Nur Farahani Azirah Apendi, said cooking at home is more economical, but she still enjoys visiting the bazaar.
She said the bazaar offers a chance to spend quality time with family.
Rahmah bazaar plays key role during Ramadan
Despite rising costs, the Rahmah Ramadan Bazaar continues to provide affordable meal options.
The initiative supports both consumers and traders during the fasting month.
