Anwar urges mutual respect among religions and races to preserve national unity

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to strengthen mutual respect among different religious and ethnic communities to maintain national harmony.

He said unity in a diverse country like Malaysia must be built on reciprocity and mutual understanding, not one-sided tolerance.

Respect and understanding key to stability

Anwar said goodwill shown by one community should be returned with equal respect.

He stressed that such values are essential to maintaining peaceful coexistence among Malaysians.

He made the remarks during a breaking-of-fast event and the launch of the Rakan Masjid × Rakan Muda Ramadan programme at Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan.

Interfaith presence reflects harmony

He highlighted the attendance of Buddhist, Christian, and Hindu leaders at the event as an example of interfaith unity.

He said their presence demonstrated mutual respect and solidarity.

Appreciation for cultural sensitivity

Anwar also expressed gratitude to members of the Chinese community and businesses that adjusted their Chinese New Year celebrations out of consideration for Ramadan.

He said the gesture reflected respect for religious practices.

Unity essential for Malaysia’s future

He reiterated that while Islam is the religion of the Federation, the rights of all communities must be protected.

He warned against actions that could create division and emphasised the importance of mutual respect.

He added that unity and understanding remain crucial to preserving peace and stability in Malaysia.
