Azalina Says PN’s Reduced Electoral Contest Does Not Automatically Benefit BN in Johor Polls

PUTRAJAYA: UMNO Information Chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has dismissed suggestions that Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) decision not to contest every constituency in the Johor state election automatically places Barisan Nasional (BN) in a stronger electoral position.

She said every political party is entitled to determine its own election strategy under Malaysia’s democratic system, and the number of seats contested should not be interpreted as a direct indicator of another coalition’s electoral prospects.

Speaking to reporters after launching the first series of the Second Chance Insolvency Policy Carnival 2026, Azalina stressed that electoral outcomes ultimately depend on voters rather than campaign assumptions or political speculation.

“The Constitution guarantees every political party the right to nominate candidates and seek the people’s mandate. Each party decides its own strategy, and that decision should be respected,” she said.

Azalina, who also serves as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), noted that BN had earlier decided to contest the Johor state election independently based on its own political assessment and organisational preparedness.

She said BN’s campaign is focused on presenting its candidates, policies and track record to voters instead of reacting to the strategies adopted by competing coalitions.

Commenting on political analyses suggesting PN’s reduced participation could improve BN’s chances in several constituencies, Azalina said such conclusions remain speculative because every constituency has its own political dynamics and voting behaviour.

According to her, election campaigns should remain centred on winning public confidence rather than relying on assumptions about rival parties’ decisions.

When asked whether PN’s move could eventually pave the way for future cooperation between BN and PN after the election, Azalina declined to speculate.

She said discussions regarding coalition arrangements or government formation would only become relevant once the election results are known.

“Our immediate priority is the state election itself. Any discussion regarding future political cooperation should only take place after the people have delivered their verdict,” she said.

Azalina also appealed to Johor voters to continue supporting BN candidates, arguing that maintaining political continuity at the state level would help ensure the smooth implementation of development programmes and public policies.

She added that close cooperation between the state administration and grassroots leadership, including village heads and local community committees, remains essential for effective governance and efficient delivery of public services.

According to Azalina, preserving administrative continuity would enable ongoing infrastructure projects, community programmes and development initiatives to proceed without unnecessary disruption.

Political observers have previously suggested that PN’s decision not to contest 23 state seats could improve BN’s prospects, particularly in constituencies expected to witness direct contests between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

However, Azalina maintained that election results cannot be determined solely by the number of candidates fielded, emphasising that the final outcome will ultimately depend on voters’ choices when they cast their ballots.
