Anwar Welcomes BNP Victory, Calls It a Democratic Milestone for Bangladesh
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman following the party’s decisive triumph in Bangladesh’s general election, describing the result as a strong affirmation of democratic governance.
In a social media post, Anwar said the outcome reflected a clear and decisive mandate from the Bangladeshi electorate despite the extraordinary political circumstances preceding the polls.
He noted that the election result underscores the resilience of democratic processes and the determination of citizens to shape their nation’s future through the ballot box.
Acknowledging Transitional Stewardship
The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation to Muhammad Yunus for his role as Chief Adviser during the transitional period.
Anwar credited Yunus with overseeing a smooth and orderly electoral process at a critical juncture in Bangladesh’s political journey.
Foreign reports indicated that more than 127.6 million eligible voters participated in the election, which also included a referendum on constitutional reform proposals.
A Defining Political Moment
The 13th parliamentary election represents a pivotal chapter for the South Asian nation of roughly 175 million people, coming in the wake of the August 2024 mass uprising that resulted in the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tarique, aged 60, is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and former president Ziaur Rahman, both influential figures in the country’s political history.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s readiness to deepen engagement with the incoming Bangladeshi administration, expressing optimism that bilateral ties would gain renewed momentum across trade, investment and regional cooperation.
He concluded by extending warm wishes from Malaysians to the people of Bangladesh as they embark on a new political era.
