Nadziruddin Mohamed Bandi Vows to Resolve Persistent Flood Issues in Changkat Jong
TELUK INTAN, May 3 — Persistent flooding affecting several areas in the Changkat Jong state constituency has become a top priority for its representative, Nadziruddin Mohamed Bandi, who has pledged to pursue comprehensive solutions to address the issue.
He said the floods have significantly impacted residents, particularly in Kampung Batu 4, Padang Tembak Dalam and Kampung Selabak, disrupting daily life and raising concerns among the local community.
What is particularly alarming, he noted, is that these areas had not experienced flooding for decades, prompting questions about the underlying causes of the recent incidents.
According to him, one of the key factors identified is the malfunction of infrastructure managed by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, including water control gates and drainage systems that are no longer functioning effectively.
This has resulted in poor water flow management, leading to prolonged flooding even when river levels are not excessively high.
“Short-term flooding may still be manageable, but when it lasts for more than two weeks, it becomes a serious issue that affects livelihoods and requires urgent intervention,” he said.
The matter has been raised at the State Legislative Assembly to ensure immediate attention and action from relevant authorities, including efforts to repair and upgrade affected drainage systems.
He also acknowledged that rapid development in surrounding areas could be contributing to the strain on existing drainage infrastructure, further increasing flood risks.
As an elected representative, he emphasised his commitment to escalating the issue to higher levels to secure long-term and sustainable solutions.
Changkat Jong encompasses several villages, including Kampung Air Hitam, Kampung Selabak, Kampung Banjar and Kampung Padang Tembak, among others, with a predominantly Malay population.
He stressed that these communities require focused attention not only in terms of infrastructure but also in welfare and socio-economic development.
“Every complaint from the people must be addressed seriously, without being dismissed due to budget constraints or jurisdictional limitations,” he said.
Beyond flood mitigation, he also highlighted the need for more affordable housing to support low- and middle-income groups.
He proposed housing projects priced around RM80,000, which he said would be suitable for households earning up to RM3,500 monthly.
He also emphasised the importance of grassroots engagement through regular community visits and direct interaction with residents.
Looking ahead, he called for efforts to attract industrial investment, particularly in technology sectors, to create sustainable job opportunities.
He added that developing a skilled local workforce would be crucial in supporting long-term economic growth in the area.
