Wrong-Way Driving Case on Old Klang Road Ends in Jail, Fine and Licence Suspension
KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — A 32-year-old e-hailing driver has been sentenced to three days’ jail, fined RM6,000, and had his licence suspended for five years after admitting to reckless and dangerous driving along Old Klang Road.
The accused, Wong Kok Kong, pleaded guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The court underscored the seriousness of the offence, citing the risk posed to other road users.
Viral Video Played Key Role
The case gained widespread attention after a video showing a car driving against traffic circulated online.
The vehicle was seen travelling from the Jalan Sepadu junction towards Jalan Kuchai Lama, raising concerns over road safety in a busy urban area.
The footage became a crucial element in the investigation.
Driver Surrendered After Search Efforts
Authorities initially attempted to locate the suspect at multiple locations, including his residence, but were unsuccessful.
He later surrendered himself at the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department office.
Kuala Lumpur JSPT chief Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said investigations confirmed the driver had travelled approximately 500 metres against traffic.
No Substance Involvement Detected
Tests conducted on the driver showed no presence of alcohol or drugs.
However, authorities stressed that taking a wrong turn does not excuse reckless driving behaviour.
Clear Warning to Road Users
The sentence is seen as a firm reminder that dangerous driving will not be tolerated.
It highlights the importance of responsible behaviour on the road to prevent incidents that could endanger lives.
