SME Strategic Plan 2030 Aims to Strengthen Local Digital Entrepreneurs

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is intensifying efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through the implementation of the SME Strategic Plan 2030, a long-term framework designed to help businesses thrive in an increasingly digital and competitive marketplace.

Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap to support entrepreneurs in adapting to changing market dynamics while improving sustainability, resilience and productivity.

According to him, the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce and the increasing presence of foreign sellers on digital platforms have made it essential for local businesses to enhance their technological capabilities and operational efficiency.

“The SME Strategic Plan 2030 focuses on transforming local enterprises into more sustainable, competitive and adaptive businesses capable of responding to emerging trends and unexpected economic challenges,” he said during a parliamentary session.

He was responding to a question regarding government initiatives aimed at helping Malaysian digital entrepreneurs compete more effectively with overseas sellers.

Among the key measures highlighted was the MyMall platform, an e-commerce marketplace established to provide local entrepreneurs with free online marketing opportunities.

Mohamad said the initiative helps reduce operating costs while enabling businesses to expand their digital presence and reach a wider customer base.

As of May 31, a total of 5,776 traders had registered on the platform, generating cumulative sales worth RM24.5 million.

He noted that the figures demonstrate the growing potential of local digital marketplaces in supporting business growth and expanding market access for Malaysian entrepreneurs.

“MyMall provides MSMEs with an opportunity to market their products online without additional promotional costs, allowing them to improve profitability and business sustainability,” he said.

The ministry has also strengthened collaboration with TEKUN Nasional through initiatives linked to TikTok Shop, enabling entrepreneurs to leverage live-streaming technology as a modern sales and marketing tool.

Through access to specialised studio facilities and digital content support, participants are able to create more engaging online campaigns and interact directly with consumers.

The programme has produced encouraging results, with more than 1,000 participating entrepreneurs collectively generating sales exceeding RM35 million.

Beyond market access, the government is also prioritising digital skills development through training and mentoring programmes conducted by the National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN).

These programmes focus on practical business skills such as digital payment systems, point-of-sale technologies, social media marketing and online business management.

Mohamad said equipping entrepreneurs with digital competencies is increasingly important as consumer behaviour continues to shift towards technology-driven purchasing habits.

In addition, Bank Rakyat has played a significant role through its Program Jajahan Rakyat initiative, which helps accelerate digital adoption among small business owners.

The programme combines financing assistance with digital transformation support, enabling entrepreneurs to integrate technology into their day-to-day operations.

According to Mohamad, the various initiatives introduced under the SME Strategic Plan 2030 reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that local enterprises remain a key driver of economic growth while successfully competing in the digital economy.

He stressed that digital transformation is no longer optional for businesses seeking long-term success.

“Digitalisation has become a necessity for modern enterprises. The government will continue strengthening support mechanisms to help MSMEs grow sustainably and contribute meaningfully to Malaysia’s economic development,” he said.

With stronger access to digital platforms, financing support and entrepreneurship training, the government expects local businesses to be better positioned to seize opportunities in both domestic and international markets over the coming years.
