Penang Exco apologises over alleged domestic incident, police reports withdrawn, says Chow Kon Yeow
GEORGE TOWN, Feb 24 — A domestic dispute involving a Penang state executive councillor has reportedly been resolved amicably after both parties agreed to withdraw police reports filed over the incident.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said he had been informed that the councillor had apologised to his wife following the alleged incident.
He said the councillor personally contacted him to explain the situation.
“I received a message from the Exco member informing me that he had apologised and described the matter as a personal family issue,” he said.
He spoke to reporters after attending a breaking-of-fast event at Masjid Kapitan Keling here.
Chow said both individuals had initially lodged police reports but later agreed to withdraw them after resolving the matter.
“They cooperated with the authorities and have since decided to withdraw their reports,” he said.
He declined to provide further details.
Chow said no decision has been made to suspend the councillor from his duties.
He said the state government is monitoring the situation.
“We take the matter seriously, but we also respect their privacy and the process they are going through,” he said.
He added that the councillor is expected to keep the state leadership informed of any developments.
Chow said the state government remains mindful of the importance of leadership integrity.
However, he said the matter is currently being treated as a personal issue.
He said the government will allow the situation to be resolved privately for now.
