MCA to Honour Ling Liong Sik with Final Tribute Ceremony Highlighting His Enduring Legacy
KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) will honour its former president Ling Liong Sik with its highest tribute through a ceremonial flag-draping of his coffin, recognising his decades of service to the party and nation.
MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the ceremony will take place at 4pm at Xiao En Centre, where mourners have been gathering to pay their respects.
He described the tribute as a symbol of the party’s deep appreciation for Ling’s leadership and contributions throughout his career.
A Leader Whose Influence Endured Beyond Office
Wee noted that Ling remained a respected figure even after stepping down from active politics, continuing to share insights and guidance with party leaders.
“He was more than a former president — he remained closely connected to the party and continued to contribute in meaningful ways,” he said.
Ling’s 17-year tenure as MCA president stands as the longest in the party’s history, reflecting both stability and sustained confidence in his leadership.
Architect of Key Transport Developments
During his time as transport minister, Ling played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s transport infrastructure.
Among his key achievements was the development of Westports Malaysia, now recognised as one of the busiest ports globally.
He also oversaw the transition of the nation’s main airport operations from Subang Airport to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, a move that significantly enhanced Malaysia’s aviation capacity.
Wee further highlighted Ling’s role in introducing the concept of affordable air travel, expanding accessibility for the wider population.
Political Milestones and National Impact
Under Ling’s leadership, MCA achieved one of its strongest electoral performances in the 1995 general election, securing a significant number of parliamentary and state seats.
He also served as Member of Parliament for Mata Kuching and Labis, and held multiple key positions within the government.
A Legacy That Will Endure
Wee said Ling’s leadership and vision would continue to inspire current and future generations within MCA.
Ling passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind his wife Ong Ee Nah and two sons.
The upcoming ceremony is expected to mark a final tribute to a figure whose influence continues to resonate in Malaysia’s political and developmental history.
