Layla Sania Becomes First Malay Woman to Release Mandarin Chinese New Year Song ‘Xin Nian Re Nao’

PETALING JAYA: Rising Malaysian singer Layla Sania has made history by becoming the first Malay woman to compose, write and record a Mandarin-language song specifically for Chinese New Year, titled Xin Nian Re Nao.

The 23-year-old artist’s decision to release a Mandarin festive track marks a significant cross-cultural milestone in Malaysia’s music scene, highlighting the role of music in fostering unity across ethnic communities.

Creative Collaboration With Mystictune

The lyrics of Xin Nian Re Nao were co-written with her father, Mystictune, who was actively involved in shaping the song’s direction. Layla said the recording process required careful attention to pronunciation, emotion and cultural context.

“I was excited but also nervous during the recording. I wanted to make sure the song was delivered sincerely and respectfully,” she said.

As a Malay artist performing in Mandarin for a Chinese New Year celebration, Layla emphasised the importance of cultural sensitivity and authenticity.

Encouraging Response From Diverse Audiences

Since its release, Xin Nian Re Nao has garnered positive feedback from listeners of different backgrounds. Layla described the reception as affirmation that music can bridge cultural divides.

“I’m truly grateful for the positive response from listeners across communities. It reminds me that music is a powerful bridge between cultures,” she said.

The song is now available on major digital streaming platforms, expanding its reach to a broader audience during the festive season.

Music Video Partnership With Cosmoderm

The music video for Xin Nian Re Nao was produced in collaboration with local skincare brand Cosmoderm and features Perry Kuan under production house UFCO.

The partnership enhanced the visual production quality while extending promotional outreach.

Layla expressed hope that the song would transcend the festive period and encourage greater appreciation of cultural diversity.

“I hope this song inspires people to explore and understand other cultures more deeply,” she added.

Regional Media Recognition

The release also attracted attention from Indonesian media platform Chindo Today, which featured coverage of Layla’s unique contribution to Chinese New Year music.

Layla said she was surprised yet touched by the regional recognition.

“For me, this song is not about crossing boundaries for controversy, but about celebrating diversity through music. Music should unite us, not divide us,” she said.

With Xin Nian Re Nao, Layla Sania positions herself as a forward-looking young artist willing to embrace creative risks while promoting cultural harmony in Malaysia’s multicultural landscape.
