Hana Malasan Moves Forward: From ‘The Shadow Strays’ to Malaysia’s Big Screen
JOHOR BAHRU, May 5 — Indonesian actress Hana Malasan is taking her career to new heights as she steps into the Malaysian film industry with the upcoming action feature Hunter Eleven: The Awaken.
Her involvement reflects the growing creative collaboration between Malaysia and Indonesia, as cross-border productions continue to expand in the region.
Hana gained wider recognition through her role in The Shadow Strays, where she played an assassin in a physically demanding performance that marked a turning point in her career.
She described the project as a breakthrough that opened doors beyond Indonesia, including her casting in Hunter Eleven by director Frank See.
In the new film, Hana plays Tara, a character that combines action with emotional depth, offering a different kind of challenge compared to her previous roles.
She noted that while she trained with a katana for The Shadow Strays, this time she had to handle a heavy sniper rifle, making the preparation process both intense and rewarding.
Filming in Malaysia also brought new experiences, particularly in overcoming language differences on set.
Despite this, she said the cast was able to build strong chemistry, especially through shared action sequences.
The film features an international lineup including Shi Yanneng, Yayan Ruhian and Sky Iskandar.
Looking back, Hana acknowledged the challenges she faced early in her career, including multiple audition rejections.
However, her passion for acting kept her moving forward, eventually leading to her breakthrough.
Her portfolio now spans multiple genres, from horror films such as Susuk and The Train of Death to The Siege at Thorn High directed by Joko Anwar.
She has also expanded her range by taking on more emotional roles, including playing a single mother in Kupeluk Kamu Selamanya.
