Values and Ethics Must Grow Alongside Economic Progress, Says Anwar
SEREMBAN: Malaysia must ensure that rapid economic growth and technological advancement are accompanied by strong values, integrity and ethical principles if the country hopes to achieve sustainable and meaningful progress, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He stressed that while countries around the world are competing in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation and clean energy, Malaysia should develop its own model of progress that places human values and moral principles at the centre of national development.
According to Anwar, focusing solely on economic achievements or technological breakthroughs without nurturing ethics and good character could create social imbalances and weaken the foundations of society.
“Today, every country is talking about AI, digital transformation, energy transition and economic growth. Malaysia must also participate and succeed in these areas.
“But at the same time, we must continue to speak about values and ethics because true progress is not measured only by economic figures but also by the character of our people,” he said during the Malaysia Five Generations Organisations Gathering dinner here last night.
Also present at the event was Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.
Anwar said Malaysia’s diversity has long been one of its greatest strengths, allowing people of different races, cultures and religions to live together peacefully and contribute to nation-building.
He cautioned Malaysians against falling into the trap of hatred and division, arguing that such sentiments are often exploited by certain groups seeking political power or personal gain.
“The real challenge facing this country is not race or religion.
“Melays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans and Kadazans have proven that they can live together and work together.
“The real issue is corruption, abuse of power and those who exploit divisions to protect their own interests,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasised that building a strong and united society begins with the cultivation of positive values and personal integrity.
He urged Malaysians to practise self-reflection and avoid negative traits such as greed, arrogance and injustice, saying these attitudes have no place in a progressive society.
According to him, any meaningful transformation must start at the individual level before expanding to families, communities and eventually the nation as a whole.
“If we truly want change, we must begin by changing ourselves first.
“From there, we strengthen our families, build better communities and ultimately create a stronger nation,” he said.
Anwar added that values and ethics should not remain mere slogans or ceremonial messages but must be reflected in everyday life, including how people work, lead and interact with others.
He believes countries that successfully balance economic progress with moral development are better positioned to face future challenges and achieve long-term prosperity.
The Prime Minister also called on young Malaysians to become active participants in shaping the nation’s future.
He said the younger generation must embrace the spirit of reform, contribute new ideas and champion positive values that can guide Malaysia towards greater success.
“Young people must step forward and show that they have the courage and determination to bring meaningful change.
“They must become the driving force behind reforms and help build a better future for everyone,” he said.
Anwar expressed confidence that Malaysia possesses the talent, resources and diversity needed to emerge as a developed nation admired not only for its economic strength but also for its integrity and social harmony.
For him, the true measure of national success lies not in statistics or technological achievements alone, but in the ability to nurture a society that is educated, ethical and united.
Such a balance, he said, will ensure that Malaysia’s progress remains inclusive, sustainable and beneficial for generations to come.
