Speaker Confirms Hamzah as Opposition Leader, Muhyiddin Assigned New Dewan Rakyat Seat
KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has officially confirmed that he has received a notification letter regarding Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin’s status as the Opposition Leader ahead of the upcoming parliamentary sitting.
The confirmation puts to rest speculation surrounding Hamzah’s role within the opposition bloc and reinforces his position as the leader of the government’s main critics in the Dewan Rakyat.
Johari said the second meeting of the fifth session of the 15th Parliament, scheduled to begin tomorrow, will also see several changes to the seating arrangements of Members of Parliament.
Among the most notable adjustments is the relocation of Pagoh MP and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, whose request for a new seat allocation has been approved.
“Yes, I have received the notification regarding the Opposition Leader, and there will also be several changes involving MPs’ seating arrangements during this sitting,” Johari told Bernama.
According to the latest seating plan published on Parliament’s official website on June 19, Muhyiddin has now been assigned a seat in Block E of the Dewan Rakyat.
Despite the changes, Hamzah’s seat remains unchanged.
He will continue to occupy the Opposition front bench, sitting alongside Kemaman MP and Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
The official confirmation comes after weeks of discussions and speculation over the leadership structure of the opposition bloc.
The issue gained public attention when PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang announced during the recent Reset Malaysia Convention that Hamzah had resumed his responsibilities as Opposition Leader.
His remarks prompted questions regarding Hamzah’s official standing within Parliament, particularly as opposition parties continue to navigate evolving political dynamics.
Johari’s confirmation is therefore seen as an important step in clarifying the situation before Parliament reconvenes.
Political analysts say the Opposition Leader plays a critical role in Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy.
Beyond leading debates against government policies, the office carries the responsibility of presenting alternative views, scrutinising legislation and ensuring checks and balances remain effective.
As such, official recognition of the position is essential for the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings.
The upcoming Dewan Rakyat meeting is expected to attract significant public attention, with lawmakers likely to debate a wide range of issues including the economy, rising living costs, government policies and current political developments.
Observers expect spirited exchanges between government and opposition MPs, particularly as Malaysia continues to navigate economic uncertainties and domestic challenges.
The revised seating arrangement is also expected to be closely watched, as seating positions in Parliament often reflect political alliances, leadership roles and the balance of power within the legislature.
For Hamzah, the confirmation solidifies his standing as the face of the opposition at a time when political competition remains intense.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin’s move to a new seat is likely to fuel further interest in the evolving dynamics within the opposition bloc and its future direction.
According to the official parliamentary calendar, the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will run from June 22 until July 16, with a packed agenda expected throughout the sitting.
