From ‘Just Pancit’ to Must-Try Dish: Malaysian Mi Goreng and Nasi Lemak Win Over Cebu Diners
CEBU CITY, Feb 28 — Malaysian favourites mi goreng and nasi lemak are gaining strong popularity in Cebu City, thanks to the determination of a Filipino entrepreneur who introduced the dishes to local diners.
Ban Ismail, 45, owner of BJ’s Creamyrice Warung Nasi Lemak, said his nearly two decades of experience working in Malaysia inspired him to bring the country’s iconic flavours back to the Philippines.
He said his familiarity with Malaysian cuisine gave him the confidence to recreate the dishes as authentically as possible.
Initial scepticism turned into growing demand
Ban said many customers were initially hesitant to try mi goreng, believing it was similar to pancit.
“People thought it was the same, but after tasting it, they realised the difference and kept coming back,” he said.
Today, mi goreng has become the top-selling item at his stall, with daily sales reaching up to 90 plates.
The growing popularity highlights increasing interest in Malaysian cuisine among Cebu residents.
Authentic ingredients key to preserving Malaysian flavour
Ban emphasised that using original Malaysian ingredients is essential to achieving authentic taste.
He imports Ayam brand soy sauce to ensure the flavour remains consistent with Malaysian standards.
“Using the right ingredients makes all the difference,” he said.
This commitment to authenticity has helped build customer trust and loyalty.
Nasi lemak also attracting loyal customers
Nasi lemak has also become a favourite, despite challenges sourcing key ingredients for sambal.
Ban adjusted his recipe slightly to maintain the desired flavour.
Customers have responded positively, making nasi lemak another popular choice.
Affordable pricing and long hours drive business success
Ban’s dishes are priced affordably, attracting a wide customer base.
His stall operates daily from morning until early morning, allowing him to serve customers at all hours.
He remains directly involved in cooking to ensure quality.
Pride in sharing Malaysian halal cuisine
Despite modest profits, Ban said he takes pride in introducing Malaysian halal food to Cebu.
He said the positive response from customers has made his efforts worthwhile.
His success demonstrates the global appeal of Malaysian cuisine and its ability to win over new audiences.
