Four Men Arrested Over Rawang Temple Demolition, Police Launch Criminal Probe

PETALING JAYA, Feb 12 — Selangor police have detained four local men in connection with the demolition of part of a temple structure in Rawang, an incident that has drawn public scrutiny due to its religious sensitivity.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed that authorities received a police report yesterday from a local complainant regarding the matter, prompting immediate investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that a portion of the temple was torn down without prior discussion and without official notification to the local authorities or the complainant.

Following the report, police opened an investigation paper under several provisions of the Penal Code, including Section 427 for mischief, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 447 for criminal trespass.

The four suspects, aged between 26 and 39, were taken into custody to assist in investigations. Police also seized a backhoe believed to have been used during the demolition.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the motive behind the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing.

Call for Public Calm

In his statement, Shazeli urged the public to refrain from speculation and to avoid spreading unverified information, especially given the sensitivity of matters involving houses of worship.

He emphasised that irresponsible commentary could inflame racial or religious tensions and disrupt public order.

“The public is advised to remain rational and not issue statements that could disturb harmony,” he said.

He assured that investigations will be conducted in a professional, transparent and impartial manner, strictly in accordance with the law.

The case continues to develop as authorities gather statements and forensic evidence. Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring due process and maintaining public peace while the investigation proceeds.
