Weichai Secures Landmark Recognition at World Green Design Summit in Brussels
BRUSSELS, Feb. 12 — Weichai Group has strengthened its international reputation in sustainable engineering after capturing multiple distinctions at the 15th Annual Conference and Brussels Summit of the World Green Design Organization (WGDO).
At the summit, Weichai’s high thermal efficiency engine series was presented with the Green Design International Award, while the company received the Green Design International Contribution Award — becoming the first enterprise in its industry worldwide to earn the honour.
In addition, five senior engineers from Weichai were conferred the Green Design Engineer (Senior) certification, underscoring the depth of its technical expertise in advancing environmentally responsible industrial solutions.
Pushing the Boundaries of Engine Efficiency
The recognition stems from Weichai’s breakthrough in commercial diesel engine technology, achieving brake thermal efficiency beyond 50 percent — a milestone long regarded as a technical ceiling in the internal combustion engine sector.
The company subsequently raised the benchmark further to 51, 52 and 53 percent, redefining global standards for fuel efficiency and emission reduction.
WGDO’s review committee highlighted the engines’ forward-thinking green design philosophy, integrated system architecture, economic sustainability and measurable contribution to long-term carbon reduction.
These technological advances directly align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those targeting industrial decarbonisation and energy transformation.
Standing Out Among Global Contenders
The WGDO, the world’s first non-profit organisation dedicated exclusively to advancing green design, holds official European Union certification and special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council.
For the 2025 awards cycle, nearly 1,000 applications from 43 countries were submitted. Following a rigorous evaluation process, 51 projects were shortlisted. Only 20 secured the Green Design International Award, while just three were selected for the Green Design International Contribution Award.
Weichai’s multi-award performance amid such intense global competition reflects strong international validation of its sustainability strategy and long-term innovation roadmap.
Beyond industry accolades, the achievement positions Weichai at the forefront of the global shift toward high-efficiency, low-emission powertrain technology.
