Delectrik Systems Secures India’s First 100MWh Utility-Scale Flow Battery Project to Strengthen Renewable Energy Grid

KUALA LUMPUR: Indian energy storage technology company Delectrik Systems Pvt. Ltd. has secured a landmark contract to deploy the country’s first utility-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) energy storage system with a capacity of 100 megawatt-hours (MWh), marking a significant milestone in India’s transition towards long-duration renewable energy storage.

The project will be undertaken in collaboration with infrastructure company Bondada Engineering Limited after the consortium won a tender awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of India’s state-owned power utility, NTPC Limited.

The installation is scheduled for deployment in 2027 at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, a project expected to become the world’s largest renewable energy park with a planned generation capacity of 30 gigawatts (GW) by 2029.

Unlike conventional battery energy storage systems that predominantly rely on lithium-ion technology, the new installation will utilise Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology, making it India’s first utility-scale, non-lithium battery energy storage system developed for large-scale grid applications.

Delectrik said the project will employ its proprietary non-containerised flow battery architecture, a design intended for commercial, industrial and utility-scale energy storage projects requiring long-duration operation and high levels of operational safety.

The company previously demonstrated the technology through a smaller 3MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery installation commissioned at NTPC’s Greater Noida facility in 2025.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dr Vishal Mittal described the latest award as an important achievement not only for the company but also for India’s clean energy sector.

According to him, the project represents the country’s first utility-scale flow battery system to be fully designed, engineered and manufactured domestically, supporting India’s ambition to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities in advanced energy technologies.

Delectrik is targeting at least one gigawatt-hour (GWh) of flow battery orders over the next 12 months across key international markets, including India, Australia, ASEAN, Africa and other emerging regions seeking long-duration energy storage solutions.

To support that expansion, the company has established two wholly owned subsidiaries to strengthen both upstream and downstream operations.

Delectrik Resources Pvt. Ltd. will focus on developing vanadium oxide production and broader vanadium resource activities, including long-term asset ownership and mineral beneficiation.

Meanwhile, Delectrik Esaas Pvt. Ltd. plans to expand into Energy Storage as a Service (ESaaS), providing battery storage solutions for commercial and industrial customers, including data centres requiring reliable backup power and renewable energy integration.

As renewable electricity generation continues to increase globally, long-duration energy storage technologies are becoming increasingly important in balancing electricity supply and demand, particularly during periods when solar and wind generation fluctuate.

Flow battery technology is widely recognised for its long operating life, enhanced safety profile and ability to deliver sustained energy over extended periods, making it particularly suitable for large-scale renewable energy projects and national electricity grids.

The latest project positions Delectrik Systems among a growing group of companies developing alternative battery technologies that complement lithium-ion systems as countries accelerate efforts to decarbonise their power sectors and improve grid reliability.
