Fahmi Zainol to Remain in Role as Penang Exco, State Government Awaits Court Outcome
GEORGE TOWN, Feb 27 — Penang executive councillor Fahmi Zainol will continue carrying out his duties as normal despite facing domestic violence charges that are currently before the court.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government will not take premature action while the case is still undergoing legal proceedings.
He said the legal principle of presumption of innocence must be respected until the court reaches a final decision.
According to him, the state administration cannot make decisions that would interfere with the judicial process.
Chow said there has been no formal pressure for Fahmi to resign from his position.
However, he noted that the matter could be discussed at the upcoming state executive council meeting.
Fahmi, who oversees the Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development portfolio, previously pleaded not guilty at the Balik Pulau Magistrate Court.
He was charged with intentionally causing injury to his wife in a recent incident.
The court granted him bail of RM2,000 with one surety.
The case has been scheduled for mention on April 28.
Chow said the state government will continue monitoring developments closely.
He added that any decision regarding Fahmi’s position will depend on the outcome of the legal process.
He emphasised that all actions will be taken in accordance with the law.
The case has drawn public attention as it involves a member of the state leadership.
