Akmal Saleh Highlights Melaka as Example of Culture-Driven Tourism Approach
PETALING JAYA, May 4 — UMNO Youth chief Akmal Saleh has pointed to Melaka as an example of how tourism can thrive through a culture-focused approach, offering it as an alternative perspective in ongoing discussions about tourism strategies.
In a statement, he invited Seputeh MP Teresa Kok to observe firsthand how Melaka has positioned itself as a major tourism destination without relying heavily on modern street-style entertainment events.
According to him, the state recorded approximately 15 million visitors last year, with tourism generating substantial economic returns.
He suggested that this achievement reflects the potential of leveraging local heritage and cultural assets as key drivers of tourism growth.
“I welcome any party to come and see how Melaka’s tourism model focuses on local cultural strengths,” he said in a social media post.
His remarks came amid broader discussions on how best to support the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, where different stakeholders have proposed varying approaches.
Akmal noted that while Melaka does host entertainment-related events, these are often adapted to incorporate traditional elements such as cultural attire, performances and music that reflect Malaysian identity.
He said this approach allows visitors to gain a deeper appreciation of the country’s heritage, enhancing their overall experience.
He also emphasised that tourism promotion should prioritise authenticity, enabling international visitors to better understand and connect with Malaysia’s unique cultural landscape.
“We should showcase what defines us so that visitors can truly appreciate our identity,” he said.
While acknowledging that different approaches exist within the tourism sector, he highlighted the importance of balancing modern entertainment with the preservation of cultural values.
The discussion on tourism strategies continues to evolve, with various perspectives reflecting differing priorities and visions for the industry’s future.
Overall, his views underscore the ongoing effort to identify tourism models that not only attract visitors but also preserve and promote national cultural identity over the long term.
