Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia Urges Review of Spending Priorities, Stresses Protection of Healthcare Sector

KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) has called on the government to reassess national spending priorities, suggesting that cost-saving measures should focus on less critical sectors while safeguarding essential services such as public healthcare.

Its president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, said the healthcare sector should remain protected as it directly affects the well-being of the population.

He cautioned that any reduction in funding, even if categorised as non-critical, could have broader implications for operational efficiency and service quality.

“Public healthcare is not merely an expenditure item but a strategic investment that must be continuously prioritised,” he said in a statement.

His remarks come amid discussions over proposed adjustments of up to RM3.06 billion involving the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM), which have drawn attention from various stakeholders.

Ahmad Fahmi also highlighted the importance of transparency in implementing any budget adjustments, including clear communication on the scope, timeline and mitigation measures involved.

He said such transparency is essential to maintain public confidence in the healthcare system.

At the same time, he suggested that the government consider reviewing spending in other areas that may have less direct impact on public welfare, rather than reducing allocations in critical sectors.

The debate over fiscal priorities comes at a time of broader economic challenges, including rising living costs and the need to maintain financial stability.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad has clarified that the discussions involve adjustments to operational expenditure rather than definitive cuts to essential healthcare services.

He assured that patient treatment, emergency care and the supply of medicines would not be affected by the proposed measures.

This clarification is seen as an effort to address public concerns over the potential impact on healthcare services.

Overall, the issue highlights the ongoing need to balance fiscal discipline with social priorities, particularly in ensuring that essential sectors such as healthcare continue to receive adequate support.
