BRAUNX Launches with Focus on Artist Ownership and Industry Transparency in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA, April 19 — A new Malaysian music label is stepping forward with a mission to reshape how artists engage with the industry, placing greater emphasis on ownership, transparency and long-term sustainability. BRAUNX, launched by creative company BWHPK, aims to fill critical gaps left by conventional record labels by prioritising artist education alongside music production.

Unveiled at Laya Skylounge in Petaling Jaya, the label enters a competitive and rapidly evolving music landscape where independent artists are increasingly seeking more control over their careers. BRAUNX’s approach reflects this shift, positioning itself as a platform that not only supports creative output but also equips artists with the tools needed to understand and manage the business side of music.

The launch drew attention from both emerging and established figures in the local music scene, including Balan Kash, Amos Paul, Arvind Raj and representatives from Music Kitchen. Arvind Krishnan, who attended the event, described the initiative as a necessary development at a time when the industry is undergoing structural changes driven by digital platforms and independent distribution models.

At the centre of BRAUNX’s vision is its founder, Mathubalan, who believes that many artists face challenges not because of a lack of talent, but due to limited understanding of industry mechanics. He pointed out that issues such as royalty structures, copyright ownership, intellectual property rights and publishing agreements are often overlooked, leaving artists vulnerable to unfavourable arrangements.

BRAUNX aims to address this imbalance by integrating education into its operational model. The label plans to provide structured learning opportunities that help artists gain clarity on contracts, revenue streams and rights management, ensuring they are better prepared to navigate the complexities of the music business.

Mathubalan said the goal is to create a more informed generation of artists who can make strategic decisions about their work. He emphasised that while traditional labels often focus on releasing music, BRAUNX intends to go further by supporting artists throughout their entire career journey.

This philosophy also extends to how the label operates internally. Rather than maintaining a top-down structure, BRAUNX encourages a more collaborative environment where artists have a say in key decisions. This approach is designed to balance creative freedom with professional guidance, offering a framework that supports both innovation and sustainability.

To mark its debut, the label introduced its initial group of artists and previewed two original tracks, signalling its readiness to contribute actively to Malaysia’s music output. This step highlights that BRAUNX is not only focused on long-term strategy but is also prepared to deliver content from the outset.

Beyond production, the label outlined plans to roll out educational programmes that include workshops, seminars and interactive sessions with industry professionals. These initiatives are expected to cover a wide range of topics, from music creation and branding to legal and financial aspects of the business.

In addition, BRAUNX announced a partnership with Maya Bazaar to launch “Unplugged by BRAUNX”, a collaborative series that will feature Tamil cover performances. The platform will bring together new and established artists, creating opportunities for mentorship and shared exposure.

Mathubalan said the initiative reflects the label’s broader commitment to accessibility, ensuring that emerging talent has avenues to showcase their work and connect with wider audiences.

BWHPK, the parent company behind BRAUNX, has been involved in various creative ventures, including film, digital media, podcasts and live events, with a strong focus on Malaysian Tamil storytelling. Its expansion into the music sector represents a strategic move to further develop local creative content.

As Malaysia’s music industry continues to evolve, BRAUNX enters the scene with a proposition that challenges traditional practices.
