Anwar Warns PKR Leaders: Step Aside If Unable to Serve, Party Must Remain People-Centric
KOTA BHARU, April 18 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Anwar Ibrahim has issued a firm reminder to party leaders and division chiefs, urging those who are fatigued, disengaged or unable to fulfil their responsibilities to temporarily step aside rather than allow their performance to undermine the party’s credibility.
Speaking during the Kelantan Keadilan Mini Convention, Anwar emphasised that leadership within PKR requires continuous commitment, not just enthusiasm during internal elections. He noted that some leaders had demonstrated strong dedication while campaigning for positions but became inactive after securing victory, raising concerns about accountability and consistency.
He said such behaviour could erode public trust, particularly when party representatives fail to remain accessible or responsive after assuming office. According to him, this disconnect between leadership and grassroots members contradicts the party’s founding principles.
Anwar suggested that those feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope with the demands of their roles should openly communicate with the party leadership and consider taking leave. He stressed that this should not be viewed as punitive, but rather as a practical solution to ensure that responsibilities are handled effectively.
The Prime Minister pointed out that during campaign periods, candidates often displayed remarkable dedication, working tirelessly and maintaining close contact with party members. However, he said this level of commitment must continue beyond the election process, as holding office comes with greater expectations and responsibilities.
He expressed concern over reports of leaders who were difficult to reach, failed to respond to communication or neglected to attend meetings after being elected. Such actions, he warned, could weaken the party’s organisational strength and damage its reputation among supporters.
Anwar reiterated that PKR is not an exclusive entity belonging to any individual or group, but a political movement built on the aspirations of the rakyat. As such, leadership positions should be occupied by those who are genuinely committed to serving the people and advancing the party’s mission.
He stressed that maintaining discipline and accountability within the party is essential to ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness. Leaders, he said, must demonstrate integrity, accessibility and a willingness to engage actively with grassroots members.
Touching on candidate selection for future elections, Anwar made it clear that positions should not be granted based on ambition alone. Instead, he said priority would be given to individuals who have proven their dedication through consistent work at the grassroots level.
He noted that while many members may aspire to become candidates, only those who actively contribute to the party’s efforts and maintain close ties with the community should be considered. Leaders who fail to engage with local branches or neglect their responsibilities risk losing the confidence of both the party and the public.
Anwar’s remarks reflect a broader effort to strengthen internal discipline and reinforce the importance of service within PKR. As the party prepares for future political challenges, he stressed that unity and commitment at all levels will be critical to maintaining public trust.
The message, delivered in a direct and candid manner, signals the leadership’s intent to ensure that party officials remain accountable and aligned with the expectations of the rakyat, reinforcing PKR’s position as a party driven by service rather than personal interest.
