Idris Khan Calls for Consistency in Discussions on Modesty and Religious Values
PETALING JAYA: Actor Idris Khan has criticised what he describes as double standards among certain members of the public who are quick to comment on issues related to modesty and religious values when it involves specific individuals, yet remain silent when similar content appears in movies or entertainment they personally enjoy.
The 38-year-old actor said religious teachings should be applied consistently and fairly, regardless of who is involved or how popular a person or work of entertainment may be.
According to Idris, whose full name is Idris Khan Shahzad Khan, there is nothing wrong with advising others on matters of faith, but such advice loses its value when it is delivered selectively.
“If something is considered wrong, then it should be treated as wrong no matter who does it.
“It is unfair when people only criticise certain individuals while ignoring similar situations involving celebrities or films they admire,” he wrote in a post on Threads.
Idris said he has observed how some social media users are quick to condemn local personalities over issues of modesty, yet enthusiastically consume foreign entertainment that features revealing attire or scenes that may not align with the values they claim to uphold.
For him, such behaviour reflects inconsistency in the way religious and moral principles are being applied.
“We should not allow our personal preferences to determine our principles.
“If we believe in something, then we should uphold it consistently and fairly,” he said.
The actor’s remarks were believed to be in response to the criticism directed at a male runner whose video recently went viral, prompting heated debate online over his attire while exercising.
Although Idris defended the individual from excessive criticism and personal attacks, he stressed that maintaining modesty remains an important religious obligation for Muslims.
He expressed hope that the individual involved would take the criticism positively and make improvements if necessary.
“I am not saying that exposing one’s aurat is acceptable.
“As Muslims, we have responsibilities, and I hope he will strive to do better in the future,” he said.
However, Idris emphasised that the way people offer advice is equally important.
He said social media should not become a platform for humiliation or character assassination, but rather a space where people can exchange views and offer guidance respectfully.
“Everyone has flaws.
“If we want to advise someone, we should do it with wisdom and good intentions so that the message can be accepted sincerely,” he said.
The actor also reminded the public that every individual is on a different journey in life and deserves the opportunity to improve without being permanently judged for a single mistake.
“No one is perfect.
“We are all trying to become better versions of ourselves, and I believe positive advice is far more effective than harsh criticism,” he said.
Idris first gained public attention as a finalist in the Hero Remaja 2007/2008 competition before building a successful acting career.
He has since appeared in several popular television dramas, including Duda Terlajak Laris, Uda & Dara and Saat Kau Takluk Cinta Ini.
Beyond acting, Idris is also known for sharing his views on social issues and frequently uses social media to discuss topics related to life, personal growth and community values.
