Immediate Repair Works Carried Out After Water Overflow Incident at Jalan Abang Haji Openg, TTDI

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 25 — The Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia (KPKT) said immediate rectification measures have been implemented following a water overflow incident at Jalan Abang Haji Openg in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), which occurred on February 22 and drew widespread attention on social media.

The ministry said the technical interventions are part of ongoing corrective efforts under the Federal Park Administrative Zone Bukit Kiara Phase 1B development project, which is scheduled for full completion by July 5, 2027.

The incident sparked criticism after a video of the overflow circulated online, with some residents alleging that the construction project contributed to recurring flooding in the area.

The development is being carried out by the National Landscape Department in collaboration with the Public Works Department of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Heavy rainfall and limited drainage capacity identified as contributing factors

According to KPKT, preliminary findings indicated that the overflow was caused by unusually heavy rainfall, combined with limited public drainage capacity and surface runoff from the construction site.

Following the incident, a site audit conducted by the Public Works Department identified several urgent measures.

These included upgrading the temporary retention pond, clearing sediment accumulation, maintaining the temporary drainage system and installing additional erosion control measures.

Water flow has also been redirected to the appropriate discharge points to improve drainage efficiency.

Monitoring intensified and utility repair works ongoing

The ministry added that utility pipes crossing the drainage system had reduced its capacity and contributed to the overflow.

Repair works involving the affected utility infrastructure are currently underway.

In addition, monitoring of slope stability, retaining structures and nearby infrastructure has been strengthened to ensure safety.

The Public Works Department is also reviewing the Erosion and Sediment Control Plan to ensure it can withstand rainfall levels beyond initial design expectations.

KPKT, through the National Landscape Department, apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused and expressed appreciation for public feedback.

The ministry said updates on the rectification efforts will be provided as work progresses.
