Maxis Deploys AI-Driven Firewall to Filter and Block Scam Calls and SMS at Network Level
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 — Telecommunications provider Maxis has implemented a new artificial intelligence-powered firewall aimed at preventing scam calls and fraudulent SMS from reaching customers.
The system, which became operational in January 2026, screens incoming voice calls and text messages, particularly international traffic, before they enter the local network.
By filtering communications at the network level, suspicious or potentially harmful messages can be blocked before reaching users.
Maxis said the technology uses AI to continuously monitor network activity and analyse traffic patterns to detect threats more effectively.
The enhanced security feature is automatically provided to customers at no additional cost.
Technology detects spoofing and fraudulent communications
The firewall is designed to block spam messages, scam SMS disguised as legitimate local communications, and traffic originating from unauthorised sources.
It also helps detect spoofing attempts, where scammers disguise their real numbers to deceive victims.
For voice communications, the system can identify suspicious caller IDs and prevent such calls from reaching subscribers.
Maxis chief network officer Yap Chee Sun said the move reflects the company’s efforts to strengthen protection against increasingly sophisticated scam tactics.
He added that maintaining network security remains a key priority for the company.
More than 500 million scam attempts intercepted
Maxis revealed that it intercepted over 500 million scam calls and SMS attempts in 2025.
These included messages containing malicious links and known scam indicators.
The telco has also introduced cross-operator verification measures to validate caller identities and detect masked numbers.
Maxis said it continues to collaborate with enforcement agencies and conduct awareness campaigns to educate users about scams.
However, the company noted that the firewall applies only to communications transmitted via the mobile network and does not cover messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or Telegram.
