McDonald’s Malaysia Unveils RM1 Billion Growth Plan

100 New Restaurants and 10,000 Jobs in Pipeline

KUALA LUMPUR: McDonald’s Malaysia has announced a RM1 billion investment initiative over the next five years, which will see the opening of 100 new restaurants nationwide and the creation of more than 10,000 employment opportunities.

Managing director and local operating partner Azmir Jaafar said the expansion strategy is designed to strengthen McDonald’s Malaysia’s nationwide footprint while generating economic value and enhancing youth employability.

Beyond restaurant expansion, the RM1 billion plan also covers technology upgrades, workforce training and community-focused initiatives.

100 New Outlets to Meet Growing Demand

The 100 new restaurants will be introduced progressively, with Sabah and Sarawak identified as priority markets due to rising customer demand that current outlets are unable to fully accommodate.

McDonald’s Malaysia currently operates more than 370 restaurants across the country. Despite navigating challenging market conditions over the past two years, the company achieved a 26 per cent year-on-year growth in 2025.

Azmir attributed this performance to sustained consumer confidence, value-driven offerings, menu innovation and disciplined restaurant operations.

The investment announcement coincided with the reopening of the McDonald’s Titiwangsa Drive-Thru along Jalan Pahang after a three-month refurbishment.

Commitment to Local Supply Chain

Azmir highlighted that 75 per cent of McDonald’s Malaysia’s products are sourced and produced locally, reinforcing support for domestic suppliers and contributing to the broader Malaysian food industry ecosystem.

He noted that the strategy aligns with the company’s long-term goal of building a resilient and future-ready workforce while strengthening local economic linkages.

Even amid economic headwinds, McDonald’s Malaysia opened seven new restaurants in 2025 and 11 outlets in 2024, underscoring steady expansion momentum.

10,000 New Employment Opportunities

Under the RM1 billion expansion plan, the company expects to generate more than 10,000 new jobs across restaurant operations, supervisory roles, management positions and support functions.

With over 16,000 Malaysians currently employed, McDonald’s Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to a 100 per cent local hiring policy.

Azmir said that for many young Malaysians, McDonald’s Malaysia represents their first employment experience, providing structured training, mentorship and career progression pathways.

Strengthening the McDonald’s Vocational Academy

A key component of the investment includes the continued development of the McDonald’s Vocational Academy, established in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources under the National Dual Training System.

The academy has played a significant role in empowering underprivileged groups, including B40 youth, persons with disabilities and Orang Asli communities, by equipping them with industry-relevant skills.

With investments spanning restaurant expansion, digital innovation, workforce development and community engagement, McDonald’s Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to long-term sustainable growth and its contribution to Malaysia’s economic landscape.
