NGO Urges Government to Clarify Alleged Recognition of UEC Certificate
PUTRAJAYA: A non-governmental organisation has called on the government to provide a clear explanation over allegations that the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) may be recognised, subject to students taking Malay Language and History.
President of Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia, Syed Hasan Syed Ali, said the issue must be addressed transparently as it involves the country’s national education policy.
He stressed that any move to recognise UEC without fully complying with existing requirements could undermine the principle of equality in Malaysia’s education system.
“Students in the national stream are required to pass Malay and History as core subjects. Granting exemptions to UEC holders could create imbalance and unfairness,” he said.
He made the remarks after submitting a memorandum to Director-General of Education Mohd. Azam Ahmad at the ministry earlier today.
Claims Following Meeting Between KPM and Dong Zong
Syed Hasan said he was informed of the matter following a meeting between the Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia and Dong Zong last month.
According to him, there were claims that students from Chinese independent schools were allowed to sit for only two subjects in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM), compared to the standard six subjects.
He also cited reports in non-Malay media suggesting that the government had agreed to accept the UEC under certain conditions.
Call for Explanation from Education Minister
Syed Hasan further urged Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek to clarify allegations that History may be taught in Mandarin at Chinese private schools.
He also called for confirmation regarding claims that representatives from Dong Zong would be brought to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“If these allegations are inaccurate, the ministry must come forward to deny them clearly to avoid public confusion,” he said.
He emphasised that any decision related to UEC recognition should be guided by the Federal Constitution and national education policies to ensure social harmony and national unity are preserved.
