AirBorneo Targets Major Expansion, Plans Jet Operations in Second Half of 2026

SINGAPORE: Regional airline AirBorneo is preparing for significant operational expansion with plans to introduce jet-powered services in the second half of 2026 to boost capacity and regional connectivity.

Chief Executive Officer Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin said the move will enable the airline to expand its route network, particularly to key ASEAN cities and major domestic destinations.

He explained that initial jet operations will be implemented through aircraft leasing arrangements, as the company is currently unable to place direct purchase orders.

“At this stage, we are focused on obtaining regulatory approvals while preparing onboard products, service standards, and operational systems,” he said in an exclusive interview at the Singapore Airshow 2026.

According to Megat Ardian, preparations include ground handling, flight operations, engineering support, revenue management, sales, and overall commercial readiness.

He noted that AirBorneo’s long-term strategy is to build an integrated network linking major cities with rural and regional communities, especially in East Malaysia.

“Our goal is to connect travellers to hubs such as Kuching, where they can continue their journeys through rural air services,” he said.

This approach, he added, allows tourists to access remote destinations such as Bario and Mulu while improving mobility for local communities.

In addition to jet operations, AirBorneo recently signed an agreement with aircraft manufacturer ATR to acquire eight new-generation turboprop aircraft, comprising five ATR 72-600s and three ATR 42-600s.

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2029 and will form the backbone of a more efficient Rural Air Services (RAS) network.

Megat Ardian said deliveries will follow a phased schedule of two aircraft in 2027, four in 2028, and the remaining two in 2029.

The new fleet is expected to replace existing ATR aircraft without altering current routes, as no new airports are anticipated in the near future.

Commenting on early operational performance, he revealed that AirBorneo transported approximately 53,000 passengers in January after taking over services from Malaysia Airlines Group.

The airline currently operates 14 aircraft, including eight ATRs and six Twin Otters, serving 23 destinations across Sabah and Sarawak.

Megat Ardian expressed confidence that the introduction of jet services, combined with fleet modernisation, will position AirBorneo as a key driver of regional air connectivity and economic development in Malaysia.
