Malaysia Secures Support for Rohingya, AI Governance and Iran-US Peace Initiatives at PUIC Summit

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia strengthened its diplomatic standing within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after three proposals submitted during the 20th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) in Baku, Azerbaijan were incorporated into the final Baku Declaration adopted by participating member states.

The successful inclusion of the Malaysian initiatives underscores the country’s continuing commitment to promoting humanitarian values, responsible technological development and peaceful conflict resolution through multilateral cooperation.

Senator Datuk Dr. Mohd. Na’im Mokhtar said Malaysia’s contributions focused on three key international priorities — protecting the rights of the Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar, supporting diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, and encouraging responsible governance of artificial intelligence.

According to him, the acceptance of these proposals reflects growing international recognition of Malaysia’s consistent advocacy on issues affecting the Muslim world and the broader global community.

One of the adopted resolutions urges the international community to strengthen efforts to safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Rohingya and other Muslim minorities in Myanmar who continue to face humanitarian challenges and alleged human rights violations.

Mohd. Na’im said Malaysia has consistently championed the plight of the Rohingya through various international forums, making the resolution an extension of the country’s long-standing foreign policy position.

In addition to humanitarian concerns, Malaysia welcomed the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran, describing diplomatic engagement as the most constructive pathway towards reducing regional tensions and promoting lasting peace.

He expressed hope that both countries would continue implementing confidence-building measures capable of strengthening stability not only in the Middle East but also across the wider international community.

The Malaysian delegation also highlighted the growing importance of establishing effective governance frameworks for artificial intelligence as digital technologies become increasingly influential across governments, businesses and society.

Mohd. Na’im said technological innovation should progress alongside safeguards that protect human rights, transparency, accountability and the public interest.

The adopted resolution encourages greater international cooperation through knowledge-sharing, capacity building and exchanges of best practices to ensure AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly.

Held from June 22 to 25 in Azerbaijan’s capital, the 20th PUIC Conference brought together parliamentary representatives from OIC member states to deliberate on a broad range of international issues, including economic cooperation, regional security, sustainable development, food security, climate change, digital transformation and humanitarian affairs.

The conference concluded with the adoption of the Baku Declaration containing 28 resolutions covering major global priorities such as Palestine, Islamophobia, economic collaboration, technological advancement and sustainable development.

Mohd. Na’im said Malaysia’s success in securing support for three separate initiatives demonstrates the country’s constructive role within international parliamentary diplomacy while reinforcing its commitment to promoting peace, human rights and responsible innovation through multilateral engagement.
