MRCB Secures Consent Judgment in Shah Alam Stadium Dispute, Legal Action Against Blogger Continues

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) has secured a consent judgment against one of the defendants named in its lawsuit concerning alleged economic harm caused by online publications relating to the Shah Alam Stadium redevelopment project.

The consent judgment was recorded at the Shah Alam High Court on June 22 and involved activist Abdul Razak Ismail, one of two individuals sued by the company over content published online regarding the demolition and redevelopment of the iconic stadium.

MRCB initiated legal proceedings against Abdul Razak and blogger Murray Hunter following a series of publications on Facebook and Hunter’s Substack platform that questioned aspects of the redevelopment project.

The company alleged that the publications caused economic damage and negatively affected its interests by spreading claims related to the project.

The settlement was reached after Abdul Razak underwent cross-examination by MRCB’s counsel, Datuk Selva Mookiah. Court proceedings were subsequently paused, allowing both parties to reach an agreement that was later formalised through a consent judgment.

Under the terms recorded before Judicial Commissioner Shoba Rajah, Abdul Razak agreed to a permanent injunction prohibiting him from publishing, republishing or repeating the allegations that formed the basis of the lawsuit.

He also undertook to remove all relevant online content within 72 hours and agreed not to make similar allegations in the future.

Additionally, he agreed not to collaborate with Murray Hunter or any other individual in publishing comparable claims relating to the Shah Alam Stadium redevelopment project.

Following the court proceedings, Selva confirmed that MRCB’s legal action against Hunter would proceed independently.

According to him, Hunter is believed to be residing in Thailand based on publicly available reports and did not participate in the legal proceedings.

As a result, the lawsuit against him is continuing in his absence, with the court fixing July 10 for the plaintiff’s submissions and July 17 for the delivery of judgment.

The hearing dates previously scheduled for June 23 and June 24 were vacated following the consent judgment reached with Abdul Razak.

Throughout the proceedings, Abdul Razak was represented by lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan.

MRCB also highlighted that this was not the first legal dispute involving Abdul Razak in relation to the Shah Alam Stadium project.

In 2023, he reportedly apologised to the company and agreed to retract statements published through media releases and social media platforms as part of a separate consent judgment arising from a defamation lawsuit linked to the same redevelopment initiative.

The latest development marks another significant chapter in the legal disputes surrounding the Shah Alam Stadium redevelopment project, which has attracted considerable public attention and debate since plans for the demolition and reconstruction of the facility were first announced.
