PAS Faces Three Strategic Paths Ahead of Johor State Election
PETALING JAYA: PAS is facing three major strategic options as it prepares for the Johor state election, with the party expected to make a crucial decision that could shape its political future and influence the broader opposition landscape.
Former PAS Central Committee member Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki said the party should carefully evaluate all available options by taking into account the current political climate, grassroots sentiment and long-term party interests.
According to him, the first option is for PAS to contest the election independently without entering into any political alliance.
He noted that the idea of going solo had been proposed earlier this year by the party’s spiritual leadership and has since received support from several younger leaders within PAS.
“Contesting on its own is viewed by some as a way for PAS to move beyond the challenges currently facing Perikatan Nasional.
“It would allow the party to strengthen its own identity and chart its political direction without being tied to coalition politics,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Zuhdi said an independent approach would provide PAS with greater freedom in determining candidates, campaign strategies and policy positions.
However, he acknowledged that such a move would require the party to rely entirely on its own machinery and resources, especially in constituencies where previous victories were built on cooperation with allies.
The second option, he said, is to revive cooperation with Umno or Barisan Nasional through what has been popularly referred to as Muafakat Nasional 2.0.
He pointed out that the idea remains relevant and feasible, particularly following reports of several meetings and discussions involving leaders from both sides.
“This option is still possible and could be achieved if there is political will from all parties involved.
“A renewed cooperation could potentially reshape the political landscape and create a stronger electoral bloc,” he said.
Nevertheless, Mohd Zuhdi stressed that any attempt to rebuild such an alliance would require mutual trust and a willingness to overcome previous disagreements.
The third option, according to him, is for PAS to postpone implementing any decision to sever ties with Bersatu until after the Johor state election.
He said this approach would involve a temporary reconciliation between PAS and Bersatu under the Perikatan Nasional coalition in order to maintain unity for the upcoming contest.
Mohd Zuhdi noted that several political observers believe cooperation between PAS and Bersatu still holds significant value and could help strengthen the coalition’s position.
“They believe PAS and Bersatu still have the potential to complement each other politically.
“For that reason, maintaining cooperation at least until the Johor election is over remains a practical option,” he said.
He added that PAS must ultimately make its decision based on realities on the ground rather than assumptions.
Malaysia’s political environment, he said, has changed considerably over the years, with voters becoming more discerning and demanding greater accountability from political parties.
As such, PAS needs to carefully weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each option before determining its course of action.
“All three options are realistic and achievable.
“The party must evaluate them carefully by considering the current situation, its own strengths and the interests of the people,” he said.
Mohd Zuhdi added that the Johor state election will not only test the strength of individual political parties but may also serve as an early indicator of future alliances and political alignments ahead of the next general election.
