Irfan Shatters National Discus Record, Claims Gold in Hungary

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin produced a remarkable performance to rewrite the national record books after winning the gold medal at the Nemzetkozi Atletikai Balaton Bajnoksag in Veszprem, Hungary.

The 30-year-old athlete unleashed a throw of 62.87 metres to surpass his previous national record of 62.55m, which he had set at the Union Leichtathletik Gala in Austria on May 25, 2017.

The achievement marked a major milestone in Irfan’s career as he finally improved on a record that had stood for almost nine years.

More importantly, it reaffirmed his status as Malaysia’s leading discus thrower and demonstrated that he remains capable of competing at a high level internationally.

Irfan displayed excellent form throughout the competition and consistently registered throws beyond the 60-metre mark before producing his record-breaking effort.

His winning distance placed him comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.

Hungary’s Zalan Strigencz secured the silver medal with a throw of 53.84m, while compatriot Zsombor Takacs claimed bronze after recording 51.31m.

The significant gap between Irfan and his closest rivals highlighted the Malaysian’s dominance throughout the event.

The victory in Hungary also continued a positive run of form for Irfan this season.

Earlier this month, he captured a bronze medal at another competition in Austria, a result that hinted he was gradually returning to peak condition.

His latest success now confirms that the former national record holder has elevated his performance to an even higher level.

For Malaysian athletics, the achievement is especially significant as it provides fresh optimism for the sport.

Irfan has long been regarded as one of the country’s most talented field athletes.

Over the years, he has represented Malaysia at numerous international competitions and established himself as one of Southeast Asia’s premier discus throwers.

However, his career has not been without challenges.

He has had to overcome injuries and periods of inconsistent form, making his recent resurgence all the more impressive.

Instead of giving up, Irfan continued to train diligently and remained committed to improving his performances.

That perseverance has now paid off in spectacular fashion.

By breaking his own national record after nearly a decade, Irfan has shown that determination and resilience can extend an athlete’s career and open new opportunities for success.

Athletics observers believe the Malaysian star still has room for further improvement.

His recent performances suggest he is entering one of the best phases of his career, with the experience and confidence needed to challenge stronger international competitors.

With several major competitions still ahead, Irfan is expected to remain Malaysia’s main hope in the discus event.

The new national record will undoubtedly serve as additional motivation as he aims to push his limits even further.

For Irfan, the gold medal in Hungary represents more than just another victory.

It symbolises years of hard work, sacrifice and perseverance.

It is also a reminder that success in sport often comes to those who continue to believe in themselves despite setbacks and disappointments.

As Malaysian athletics looks toward the future, Irfan’s achievement stands as a source of inspiration and proof that the country still possesses athletes capable of making their mark on the international stage.

With a new national record now under his belt, the focus will shift to whether he can continue his impressive momentum and achieve even greater heights in the years to come.
