Thai Police Dismantle Cross-Border Drug Network Linked to Malaysia, Seize More Than 400,000 Meth Pills
YALA: Thai authorities have dismantled a major cross-border drug trafficking network believed to be supplying methamphetamine pills to Malaysia following the arrest of four alleged syndicate leaders during a coordinated anti-narcotics operation across southern Thailand.
The operation, led by the Yala Provincial Police Narcotics Suppression Bureau, resulted in the seizure of more than 400,000 methamphetamine pills, commonly known as “yaba”, along with properties, land and vehicles valued at over RM1.92 million that investigators believe were connected to the group’s illegal activities.
Police said the operation followed an extensive intelligence effort that began after several senior members of the organisation were detained in earlier enforcement actions. Information gathered during those investigations enabled authorities to identify the syndicate’s command structure and locate individuals suspected of directing drug distribution in Thailand’s southern border provinces.
According to a police spokesperson, investigators believe the group used natural crossing routes in Yala and Narathiwat to move narcotics across the Thai-Malaysian border before the drugs were distributed through criminal networks operating in Malaysia.
Based on the intelligence collected, a dedicated task force was formed to track four individuals believed to have played central roles in coordinating supply, storage and transportation activities.
The first arrest took place in Bannang Sata district, where officers recovered 99,600 methamphetamine pills and seized assets estimated to be worth more than RM261,000.
Investigators then raided a residence in Muang Yala district, leading to the arrest of a second suspect. During the search, officers discovered 109,800 pills concealed inside the ceiling of the house. Authorities also confiscated assets valued at approximately RM938,000.
The investigation subsequently expanded into Yarang district in Pattani province, where another suspected syndicate leader was taken into custody. Officers seized 152,000 methamphetamine pills together with assets valued at more than RM272,000.
The final suspect was arrested in Muang Yala district, where police recovered an additional 30,000 pills. Authorities also confiscated land, residential property and several vehicles worth an estimated RM548,000.
Police described the week-long operation as a significant breakthrough against organised narcotics trafficking in southern Thailand, saying the dismantled network was believed to be one of the key suppliers serving the Malaysian market.
Investigators are continuing to examine the syndicate’s wider network, including financial transactions, logistics channels and additional associates who may still be operating within Thailand or across the border.
Thai authorities said further intelligence-led operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt transnational drug trafficking organisations and strengthen cross-border enforcement cooperation aimed at reducing the movement of illicit drugs between Thailand and Malaysia.
