Malaysia Evaluating Anti-Ship Missile Offers From Four Countries to Strengthen Littoral Combat Ships

KLUANG: Malaysia is assessing proposals from four countries for the acquisition of anti-ship missile systems as part of efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the Royal Malaysian Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) fleet, with delivery timelines and system compatibility emerging as key considerations in the government’s procurement process.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the government has not reached a final decision, explaining that the evaluation remains ongoing as defence planners examine which missile system best complements the weapons architecture installed on the LCS platform.

Among the countries under consideration are Türkiye and South Korea, although the minister indicated that several other nations have also submitted proposals as Malaysia continues reviewing available options before committing to a purchase.

Speaking after attending the Southern Zone Armed Forces Family Day Carnival at X-Park Impiana Square 2 in Kluang, Khaled said the procurement exercise extends beyond comparing technical specifications. Authorities are also placing significant emphasis on delivery schedules to ensure the selected system can be deployed within a reasonable timeframe.

He explained that suppliers capable of delivering the missiles within one to two years would receive greater consideration, reflecting Malaysia’s intention to accelerate the operational readiness of its naval assets.

Apart from delivery schedules, the government is also examining the overall cost of the missile systems together with their technological capabilities. Factors such as radar detection performance, targeting features and firing mechanisms are being assessed to determine which solution offers the most suitable balance between operational effectiveness and long-term defence requirements.

According to Khaled, every proposal will undergo a comprehensive technical and strategic evaluation before the government decides which supplier will receive the contract. The selection process is intended to ensure that Malaysia invests in a system capable of integrating effectively with existing naval platforms while meeting future operational demands.

He stressed that only missile systems fulfilling the Armed Forces’ operational requirements would be considered, noting that compatibility and mission effectiveness remain central to the procurement exercise.

The acquisition forms part of Malaysia’s broader effort to strengthen maritime defence capabilities as the country continues modernising its naval fleet. The Littoral Combat Ship programme represents one of the Royal Malaysian Navy’s most significant defence projects, with the vessels expected to play an important role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and territorial waters.

While Khaled did not disclose the identities of the remaining countries participating in the evaluation or the estimated value of the procurement, he reiterated that the government’s priority is to secure a system capable of supporting Malaysia’s long-term defence objectives rather than making decisions based solely on price.

He added that the selected missile system must provide the level of operational capability required to help deter potential threats and enhance the country’s ability to protect its maritime boundaries from intrusion.

Separately, Khaled said the Southern Zone Armed Forces Family Day programme, which was introduced last year, continues to serve important welfare and community-building objectives within the military.

He explained that the initiative encourages service personnel and their families to participate in healthy recreational activities while strengthening relationships among members of the Armed Forces community. The programme also provides opportunities for military personnel to spend quality time with their families and engage in activities that promote positive lifestyles outside their official duties.

The minister said initiatives of this nature are intended to foster stronger family bonds while encouraging military personnel to spend their leisure time on meaningful activities that contribute positively to their overall well-being.
