Severe Storm Triggers Flash Floods and Traffic Gridlock Across Klang Valley
Heavy Rain Causes Flooded Roads and Fallen Trees From Kuala Lumpur to Selangor Suburbs
KUALA LUMPUR — Severe weather conditions across the Klang Valley this afternoon caused flash floods, fallen trees and major traffic congestion in several parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor after hours of continuous heavy rain.
The downpour led to rising water levels on major roads while traffic slowed significantly in affected areas.
Social media users shared numerous photos and videos showing flooded roads in Ampang, Gombak, Setia Alam, Meru and Hulu Langat.
Several videos showed floodwaters reaching near the top of car tyres while vehicles struggled to move through submerged roads.
Apart from flash floods, fallen trees were also reported in several locations, further worsening traffic conditions.
One of the affected roads was Jalan Gombak near Batu 10 where fallen trees reportedly blocked both directions of traffic.
The incident caused lengthy traffic congestion during the evening peak hour as many commuters were travelling home from work.
Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) subsequently issued thunderstorm warnings covering large parts of the country due to unstable weather conditions.
In its latest advisory, MetMalaysia said thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue until 6pm in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
Severe weather is also forecast in several other states including Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Pahang.
In Pahang, affected areas include Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, Bera and Rompin.
For Sarawak, areas including Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang are also under weather alerts.
Meanwhile in Sabah, warnings cover interior districts, west coast areas including Kota Kinabalu and Ranau, as well as Tawau and Sandakan.
MetMalaysia also warned that rainfall in some areas could exceed 20 millimetres per hour, increasing the risk of sudden flash floods.
Members of the public have been advised to remain cautious, especially while driving, and to avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas.
Residents were also urged to stay updated on weather developments and comply with any safety instructions issued by authorities.
