Selangor Maintains Ban on Foreign Imams for Tarawih Prayers During Ramadan

SEPANG: The Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS) has reaffirmed its decision to maintain the ban on foreign imams leading tarawih prayers at mosques and suraus across Selangor during Ramadan.

Its chairman, Salehuddin Saidin, said the policy, which has been in place since 2015, aims to prioritize local Quran memorizers and strengthen the role of homegrown religious talent.

He noted that the decision is in line with the guidance of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who has consistently emphasized the development of tahfiz students in the state.

“We have many capable local huffaz who deserve opportunities to lead prayers and gain practical experience.

“There is no need to rely on foreign imams when local talent is readily available,” he said.

Empowering Local Huffaz

Salehuddin said Selangor has more than 2,000 suraus and around 1,400 mosques that can benefit from the involvement of local tahfiz students.

He explained that allowing them to serve as imams helps build their confidence, leadership skills, and financial stability.

“The quality of Quran recitation among our local students is very good. They are fully capable of leading congregational prayers,” he added.

Preventing Doctrinal and Administrative Issues

The ban, he said, also helps prevent differences in religious practices and reduces the risk of unauthorized fundraising activities.

Since its implementation in 2015, MAIS has found that the policy has contributed to better governance and consistency in mosque management.

He stressed that the council will continue monitoring compliance to ensure that all mosques and suraus adhere to established guidelines.

MAIS also encourages closer cooperation between tahfiz institutions and mosque committees to ensure a steady supply of qualified local imams during Ramadan.
